How To Replace Tail Lights For Your Chevy Cars

Published on Mar 11, 2025 by Sarchione

Tail lights are essential for your Chevy’s visibility and safety, especially when driving at night or in bad weather. If one or both tail lights stop working, it’s important to fix the problem as soon as possible to avoid accidents — and to steer clear of potential tickets. Fortunately, learning how to replace tail lights on your Chevy is a manageable task for many car owners. Whether you drive a Chevy Malibu, Silverado, Equinox, or Traverse, the steps are similar across most models. Follow this guide to replace your Chevy’s tail lights correctly.

Step 1: Gather Necessary Tools and Replacement Parts
Before you begin, make sure you have the correct replacement tail light bulb or assembly for your Chevy model. Check your owner’s manual for the bulb type or tail light part number. Common tools you’ll need include a screwdriver, a socket wrench, and possibly plastic trim removal tools. Having gloves on hand is also helpful, especially when handling bulbs.

Step 2: Access the Tail Light Assembly
In most Chevy vehicles, you’ll need to access the tail light assembly from inside the trunk or rear cargo area. Open the trunk or liftgate and locate the plastic cover or panel on the side where the faulty tail light is located. Carefully remove the cover by prying it off or unscrewing it, depending on your Chevy’s design.

Step 3: Remove the Tail Light Housing
With the panel removed, you’ll see the back of the tail light assembly secured with screws or bolts. Use your socket wrench to carefully loosen and remove these fasteners. Gently pull the tail light assembly away from the vehicle — it may require a bit of wiggling if it’s held in place with clips.

Step 4: Replace the Tail Light Bulb (If Applicable)
If your Chevy has individual bulbs rather than a sealed tail light assembly, locate the bulb socket at the back of the housing. Turn the socket counter-clockwise to release it, then pull the old bulb straight out. Avoid touching the new bulb with your bare hands — oils from your skin can shorten its lifespan. Use gloves or a clean cloth to insert the new bulb. Once the new bulb is in place, reattach the socket to the housing.

Step 5: Install a New Tail Light Assembly (If Applicable)
For some newer Chevy models, the tail light assembly itself may need replacing rather than just the bulb. In this case, carefully disconnect the wiring harness attached to the old assembly and plug it into the new one. Make sure the connection is secure and that no wires are pinched or exposed.

Step 6: Reinstall the Assembly
Once the new bulb or tail light assembly is in place, carefully position the assembly back into the body of your Chevy. Align the mounting holes and secure the screws or bolts you removed earlier. Double-check that the assembly sits flush with the vehicle’s body and that all fasteners are tightened properly.

Step 7: Test Your New Tail Lights
Before replacing the interior panel, turn on your Chevy and test the new tail light. Make sure both the tail lights and brake lights are functioning correctly. This is also a good time to check turn signals and reverse lights if they share the same assembly.

Step 8: Reattach the Interior Panel
Once you’re satisfied that the tail lights are working, replace the interior access panel and secure it in place. Clean up any fingerprints or smudges on the exterior lens, and you’re done!
