How To Do An Engine Oil Change For Chevy Vehicles

Published on Sep 9, 2024 by Sarchione

Regularly changing your engine oil is one of the most important maintenance tasks for keeping your Chevy running smoothly. If you’re looking to change the engine oil in your Chevy, this guide will walk you through the process step-by-step.

Gather the Necessary Tools and Supplies

Before starting, make sure you have the following items:
•    New engine oil (check your owner's manual for the correct type and amount)
•    New oil filter
•    Oil filter wrench
•    Oil drain pan
•    Funnel
•    Socket wrench set
•    Car jack and jack stands or ramps
•    Clean rags or paper towels
•    Gloves and safety glasses

Prepare Your Vehicle

1.    Warm Up the Engine: Run your engine for a few minutes to warm up the oil. Warm oil drains faster and more completely.
2.    Secure Your Vehicle: Park on a flat surface, engage the parking brake, and use a car jack to lift the front of your vehicle. Secure it with jack stands or drive it onto ramps.

Locate the Oil Drain Plug

The oil drain plug is typically located on the bottom of the oil pan, beneath your engine. Refer to your owner’s manual for the exact location if needed.

Drain the Old Oil

1.    Position the Drain Pan: Place the oil drain pan under the oil drain plug to catch the old oil.
2.    Remove the Drain Plug: Use a socket wrench to remove the drain plug. Be cautious, as the oil may be hot. Allow the oil to drain completely, which usually takes a few minutes.
3.    Replace the Drain Plug: Once the oil has drained, wipe the area clean and reinstall the drain plug, tightening it securely with your socket wrench.

Replace the Oil Filter

1.    Locate the Oil Filter: The oil filter is usually found on the side of the engine. Use your owner’s manual for precise location details.
2.    Remove the Old Oil Filter: Use an oil filter wrench to unscrew the old oil filter. Be prepared for some oil spillage and have your drain pan ready.
3.    Prepare the New Oil Filter: Before installing the new oil filter, apply a small amount of new oil to the rubber gasket on the top of the filter. This helps ensure a good seal.
4.    Install the New Oil Filter: Screw the new oil filter into place by hand, tightening it securely but not overly tight.

Add the New Oil

1.    Locate the Oil Filler Cap: The oil filler cap is usually on the top of the engine. Remove the cap and insert a funnel into the opening.
2.    Pour in the New Oil: Slowly pour the new oil into the funnel, checking your owner’s manual for the correct amount. Be careful not to overfill.
3.    Replace the Oil Filler Cap: Once you’ve added the new oil, replace the oil filler cap and ensure it’s secure.

Check the Oil Level

1.    Start the Engine: Run the engine for a few minutes, then turn it off and wait a few minutes for the oil to settle.
2.    Check the Dipstick: Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, and then pull it out again to check the oil level. Ensure the oil level is within the recommended range.

Dispose of the Old Oil Properly

Used engine oil is hazardous and must be disposed of properly. Take the old oil and filter to a recycling center or an auto parts store that accepts used oil.
