Knowing how to change tires on your Chevy is an essential skill for every car owner. Whether you’re dealing with a flat tire or simply replacing worn-out tires, understanding the process can help you stay safe and keep your vehicle running smoothly. Here’s a comprehensive guide to assist you.
Before you start, ensure you have all the necessary tools and equipment. These typically include:
• A spare tire or new replacement tire
• A jack
• A lug wrench
• A wheel wedge or chock
• Gloves and a flashlight (if working at night)
Having the proper tools on hand will make the process quicker and safer.
Safety is paramount when changing tires. Park your Chevy on a flat, stable surface away from traffic. Turn on your hazard lights and engage the parking brake. To prevent the vehicle from rolling, place wheel wedges or chocks on the tire opposite to the one you are replacing.
Make the tire’s lug nuts loose using a lug wrench. Turn the wrench counterclockwise to loosen them, but don’t remove them entirely yet. Loosening the lug nuts while the tire is still on the ground ensures stability and makes the process easier.
Position the jack under your Chevy’s designated lift point, as specified in your owner’s manual. Slowly raise the vehicle until the tire is off the ground. Make sure the vehicle is stable before proceeding.
With the vehicle lifted, fully unscrew and remove the lug nuts. Place them in a secure spot so you don’t lose them. Carefully pull the old tire straight off the wheel hub and set it aside.
Align the new or spare tire with the wheel hub, ensuring it fits snugly onto the bolts. Hand-tighten the lug nuts onto the bolts in a star pattern to keep the tire evenly seated. Avoid tightening them completely at this stage.
Lower down the vehicle using the jack until the tire is on the ground but is not bearing the full weight of the car. Tighten the lug nuts using the lug wrench in the same star pattern. This ensures even distribution and a secure fit.
Once the lug nuts are tightened, fully lower the vehicle and remove the jack.
After installing the new tire, use a tire pressure gauge to check that it’s inflated to the recommended pressure level specified in your Chevy’s owner’s manual. Proper tire pressure is essential for safety and performance.
