The 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe comes in six trims, and the engine is the first thing to sort out. Every trim but the High Country comes with the 5.3L V8 as standard, while the High Country gets the 6.2L V8. You can add the Duramax diesel on everything above the LS, and seating runs from seven to nine.
Three engines to choose from
The engine changes how a 2026 Tahoe drives more than any other choice. The 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 is the everyday option, making 355 hp with a 10-speed automatic. Step up to the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 and you get 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.
The Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel is the odd one out. It doesn't match either V8 for horsepower, but its 495 lb-ft is the most torque of the three, and its EPA-estimated highway range of 624 miles per tank is worth a look if you rack up highway miles.
For a hot-rod version, the RST Performance Edition pairs a 6.2L V8 that makes 433 hp with Brembo front brakes and Chevrolet Performance induction and exhaust.
Which engine goes with which trim
Most of your choosing comes down to two questions: do you want the 6.2L, and do you want the diesel? Here's how the six trims line up.
| 2026 trim | Engine choices | Seating | Hardware worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| LS | 5.3L V8 | Up to 9 seats | 18-inch Bright Silver aluminum wheels, all-season tires |
| LT | 5.3L V8, Duramax diesel available | Captain's chairs available | Leather-appointed, heated front bucket seats |
| RST | 5.3L V8, 6.2L V8 or Duramax diesel available | Captain's chairs available | Perforated leather, available 24-inch wheels |
| Z71 | 5.3L V8, 6.2L V8 or Duramax diesel available | Captain's chairs available | Autotrac two-speed active transfer case, Hill Descent Control |
| Premier | 5.3L V8, 6.2L V8 or Duramax diesel available | Captain's chairs standard | Heated and ventilated front row, heated second-row bucket seats |
| High Country | 6.2L V8 standard, Duramax diesel available | Captain's chairs standard | Magnetic Ride Control, perforated leather |
Z71 or RST: capability or style
Both trims can have the 6.2L V8 or the Duramax, so the hardware is what separates them. The Z71 is built for rough ground, with an Autotrac two-speed active transfer case and Hill Descent Control. It also has an aluminum skid plate with red recovery hooks, black tubular assist steps and a high approach angle fascia.
The RST goes the other way, with perforated leather seats and available 24-inch wheels. The Performance Edition adds that 433 hp V8 and the Brembo brakes.
If dirt roads and trailheads are part of your week, we'd start with the Z71. If you want a Tahoe that looks and drives sporty, the RST is the better fit.
Premier or High Country: comfort and ride
The Premier is where comfort gets serious. You'll get a heated and ventilated front row, heated second-row bucket seats and standard captain's chairs, and you can still choose the 6.2L or the Duramax.
The High Country comes with the 6.2L V8 and Magnetic Ride Control built in, plus perforated leather and heated and ventilated front seats.
Suspension, towing and cargo
The Z71 and High Country list the available Four-Corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension, the Z71 on top of its transfer case and the High Country alongside its Magnetic Ride Control.
If you tow, the 2026 Tahoe is rated up to 8,400 lbs. Cargo space tops out at 122.7 cu. ft. To compare it with the Suburban, take a look at the new Chevrolet Suburban.
Seats for a crowd
Eight seats are standard on the 2026 Tahoe, and seven or nine are available. The LS offers up to nine seats, so that's where to start if you regularly carry a full house. Comparing a few third-row seat vehicles? The Tahoe's seven-to-nine seat range is a useful reference.
Captain's chairs give each second-row passenger a seat of their own. They're standard on the Premier and High Country and available on the LT, RST and Z71.
Which trim fits which driver
- Carrying a crowd: The LS, with up to nine seats.
- Long highway days: Any Duramax trim.
- Rough roads and trails: The Z71.
- Maximum comfort: The Premier or High Country.
The LT is the practical middle, and it's got heated, leather-appointed front seats. For style and punch, look at the RST with the 6.2L V8.
